We’ve been to, put on and helped out in a lot of events in the past. So here’s a recap of just some of the past events we’ve put on.
June 8th – SD Chapter Banquet
The CCA San Diego Chapter held their annual banquet once again at Hubbs-Seaworld Research Institute (HSWRI) and had a great turnout filled both with old friends and new faces. HSWRI were fantastic hosts this year as they generously donated the venue to CCA CAL for the evening, which boasted some great times for everyone in the room. You can read the entire recap of the banquet or watch our recap video.
May 18th – LA Chapter BBQ
The CCA Los Angeles Chapter held their 4th annual banquet at the Long Beach Rod & Gun Club and served up some fantastic barbecue to almost 150 people! Thanks to the leadership of LA Chapter President John Ballotti, the LA Chapter pulled off a great event and welcomed a great mix of some old friends in the community along with some new faces to CCA California. Make sure to watch the recap video here.
May 4th – Riptide Rendezvous
The fish definitely showed up for Riptide Rendezvous at Rincon Beach Park, as fly and conventional tackle fisherman were grouped together for a tournament in earlier in May. Riptide Rendezvous, a combined tournament for both conventional and fly anglers, was put on by the Southwest Council of Fly Fishers International with help from CCA California. Visit our recap for all of the results from the tournament.
April 16th – LA Chapter Youth Fishing Trip
Thanks to a generous donation by Friends of Rollo, the CCA LA Chapter hosted 23 at risk boys from the Optimist Youth Homes and Family Services (OYHFS) organization to a half day of fishing trip on the Monte Carlo out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro. The crew of the Monte Carlo did an excellent job with the boys and the Landing Operator generously donated the use of the rods and reels for the day. 140 fish were caught, cleaned by the crew, bagged, and left the boat with the boys who will enjoy fresh fish for meals for many days.
April 14th – 2019 Day at the Docks
CCA CAL spent the day at the San Diego Landings for the 2019 Day at the Docks, put on by the Port of San Diego. We were able to gain much exposure and inform the entire fishing community of the current issues we are facing in 2019. Also, we had plenty of fun catching up with all of our sponsors, friends and members as they all came and said hi at our booth. Make sure to visit our photo gallery to see all of our pictures from the day.
March 6th – 31st – Fred Hall Shows in Long Beach, Bakersfield and Del Mar
Some of the biggest outdoors shows on the West Coast made stops in Long Beach, Bakersfield and San Diego all within the month of March. CCA CAL was present at all 3 shows with a fantastic promotion featuring our Premium Target Raffle. Our raffle boasted over $10,000 in retail value from 12 of our great sponsors. We also had a great promotion going on outside. For $50, show-goers received a membership to CCA, entry to the show, $25 worth of raffle tickets to our Premium Target Raffle, and a CCA CAL drawstring backpack with goodies inside. You could not go to the show without seeing CCA CAL!
Please visit our photo gallery to see some of our favorite moments from all three shows!
February 15th – 17th – Pacific Coast Sportfishing Festival
The 2019 PCS Festival was very busy for CCA CAL as we met a ton of people and signed up some new members as well. We had the opportunity to pass out plenty of information to new members and sponsors, and reconnect with all of our current sponsors. There were plenty of great seminars going on throughout the entire show including Bob Hoose from Costa Sunglasses (and CCA CAL State Board Member), Billy Keleman from Billy K Fishing, and Dave Hansen from Your Saltwater Guide.com.
Make sure to check out our photo and video gallery to relive the entire weekend!
January 27th – Dana Landing Bay Bass Seminar
We had a fantastic turn out at the 7th Annual Bay Bass Seminar at Dana Landing Market & Fuel Dock and Fast Lane Kayaks. The great weather gave an opportunity to come out to see 4 fantastic seminar speakers talk all kinds of bass, and to score a great (and free) lunch provided by Traeger Grills. Members from our CCA San Diego Chapter volunteered the entire day as most people who attended became members of CCA.
That day alone garnered almost 100 new members and renewals, thanks to a great incentive as everyone who either became a new member or renewed their membership ($35 Annual fee) received a $40 gift card to Dana Landing.
Make sure to check out the recap video in our video gallery!
January 17th – 20th – International Sportsmen’s Expo
For the first time ever, CCA CAL traveled up north to Sacramento for the 2019 International Sportsmen’s Expo. This was the ISE’s 30th year in Sacramento at the CAL Expo Center. All throughout the 4 days of the show, we handed out literature, stickers, and memberships to many of the thousands of people walking the show floor each day. Many of those people were actually very happy to know about CCA CAL and to learn all about what we are already doing currently in Southern California, and were very interested in how we could do the same for them.
December 8th – LA Chapter Bluefin Seminar
The CCA LA Chapter put on a great Bluefin Seminar, hosted by the South Bay Anglers Club, at the Alpine Village in Torrance. Western Outdoor News Saltwater Editor and CCA CAL advocate Merit McCrae started things off from the science perspective behind Pacific Bluefin Tuna by explaining fish maturity, their life cycles, and also explain more about Dr. Barbara Block’s Tag-A-Giant Program.
Jacob Moreno, captain of the charter boat Ultra out of 22nd Street Landing in Long Beach, and is now one of the captains on their newly acquired charter boat, Pescador. Moreno used the opportunity to talk about how to fish for bluefin while on a charter boat and while on party boats as well.
Attendees also had the opportunity to learn about all kinds of methods and techniques behind catching bluefin from private boater and bluefin expert Ben Secrest. He went into techniques of how to be the most successful at catching bluefin, which included how to fish with flat falls, great private boat technique and how to fly the kite effectively.
November 10th – 2018 San Diego Chapter Banquet
The CCA San Diego Chapter banquet had a great turnout as we were celebrating “Sustainability Through Partnerships” with a lot of our partners, sponsors and members in San Diego.
Everybody who was there was offered a tour of the entire Hubbs Seaworld Research Institute facility and got to see all of the broodstock fish including, White Sea Bass, California Halibut and Yellowtail, and a handful of our sponsors were there tabling and showing off product and new trips coming up for 2019. CCA CAL State Board Member Bill Varney was also at the event selling the brand new 2019 CCA CAL Tide Calendars as well.
The CCA San Diego Chapter volunteers were nothing short of fantastic in setting up a great event at Hubbs Seaworld, and provided great raffle items, entertainment and food.
We were just slightly short of a sold out event today.
A huge thank you is in order to CCA CAL Board Chairman Bill Shedd, who generously hosted the AFTCO match, Pat Murray from CCA National for being there and helping out, Don Kent and the entire team at Hubbs Seaworld, and all of the CCA CAL State Board Members Wendy Tochihara, Harold Davis, and Bill Varney for attending.
November 7th – Veterans Trip, Los Angeles Chapter
On November 7, thanks to a generous donation by the Larry Brown Youth and Veterans Fishing Charity, the CCA LA Chapter 16 veterans out fishing. These veterans came from the VA Long Beach Blind Center, CAL VET West LA, and VA Domiciliary of Greater Los Angeles VA Hospital, and they were all in high spirits onboard the Betty-O, owned and captained by Mike Reinsch. The Calico bass and sand bass had cooperated the entire day as if they knew who was on the other end of the line. The highlight of the trip was watching Paul, a 97 year old World War II veteran who participated in the Normandy invasion, caught fish after fish, thoroughly enjoying his day on the water.
While the bass dominated the catch, the vets also caught bonito, whitefish, sand dabs, and the occasional bird. Each of the veterans enjoyed their day out fishing with the chapter, and we are looking forward towards taking out more groups of vets in 2019.
October 13th – Live in the 805, Channel Islands Chapter
The 2nd Annual Channel Islands Chapter Fundraiser, Live in the 805, was a great success up in Oxnard! This clinic sold out in just 2 days, and all of the proceeds went straight to CCA California.

July 20th/21st – Bill Varney’s Surf Fishing Clinic – Carlsbad State Beach

Both clinics were 2 days long at each beach, and offered opportunities to fish on a late afternoon and early morning during rising tides. All 4 days were a great success and drew about 50 people for each seminar, a healthy mix of both longtime surf fisherman and new surf fisherman brand new to the scene.
