Thanks to a generous donation by Friends of Rollo, the CCA LA Chapter hosted 23 at risk boys from the Optimist Youth Homes and Family Services (OYHFS) organization to a half day of fishing trip on the Monte Carlo out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro. In addition to the 23 boys, there were 7 mentors from the organization, 6 LA Chapter members, and Chris Arechaederra, Assistant Director of CCA CAL.

The Monte Carlo departed promptly at 6:30 AM. The water in the San Pedro Long Beach area was a cold 55 degrees, so bottom fishing was the only option available. The first stop in about 140 feet of water produced a whitefish bite with everyone loading up on the aggressive biters. After a few hours the boat moved to about 250 feet of water hoping to produce a greater variety of fish. Reds, chuckle heads, salmon grouper, and sand dabs all came aboard. The wind and seas were calm making the day extra special. The crew of the Monte Carlo did an excellent job with the boys and the Landing Operator generously  donated the use of the rods and reels for the day. 140 fish were caught, cleaned by the crew, bagged, and left the boat with the boys who will enjoy fresh fish for meals for many days.

OYHFS provides innovative and individualized treatment, eduction, and support services to children, young adults and families to better their lives. It is the largest provider of residential services to Probation youth in the state of California.  They receive referrals from LA County Departments of Children and Family Services, Mental Health, and Probation Departments from 18 counties throughout California.

We hope to continue working with youth programs in 2019 with each of our other chapters.
