Earlier this year, NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries initiated a review of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary nomination, set to expire on October 5, 2020 after 5 years on the inventory. To date, NOAA has not initiated a designation process for this site. The purpose of the nomination review was to determine if it remains responsive to the sanctuary nomination process criteria and considerations and should remain in the inventory for another five years.

NOAA consulted with the nominating party, held a public workshop and accepted public comment to gather new or updated information regarding the nominated area’s responsiveness to the 11 criteria on national significance and management considerations. The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries has determined that the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary nomination will remain on the inventory for an additional 5 years. For more information about the nomination or five-year review processes, visit nominate.noaa.gov, where ONMS has posted relevant documents to the CHNMS five-year review.  Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to set up a meeting to discuss this in further detail.
