The Coastal Conservation Association of California will be helping out in an upcoming Surf Fishing tournament with the Southwest Council of Fly Fishers International.
The tournament is named Riptide Rendezvous and is a non-profit fundraising event, with all net proceeds going to the SWCFFI and CCA CAL. The CCA Channel Islands and Santa Barbara Chapters will help put on the event.
There will be two divisions: “Fly Tackle” and “Conventional Tackle”. Contestants in the Fly Tackle Division each provide one “surf appropriate” fly, which go into a pool. Contestants in the Conventional Tackle division do the same with a lure. Before the start of the tournament, each contestant randomly pulls a lure or fly from the pool for their division.
Contestants can only use that single fly or lure during the tournament. If they lose it, they must stop fishing. Fishing is limited to 2 hours, so there is a heavy dose of strategy required in order to do well. Riptide Rendezvous is strictly catch-and-release, with scoring based on the length of the fish caught. Fly Tackle Division and Conventional Tackle Division anglers compete against other anglers in their division Almost all species of fish are eligible, and for each Division, there are awards for:
- First fish
- Largest fish (based on fork length in inches)
- The most points (1 point/inch).
In the Fly Tackle Division, both the anglers and the persons tying the winning flies will receive awards.
At the end of fishing, there are the awards ceremony and lunch. And after that, there is a fantastic raffle, with all net proceeds going to the Southwest Council of Fly Fishers International and Coastal Conservation Association California.
